American Idol Commentary - No One's Feelin' Good

Some are surprised over who left tonight; I'm not. I've been watching this show for six seasons now, and there's a certain trend. This early in the game the people that go home are those that don't stand out, just like Simon Cowell says. Yes, the man knows what he is talking about. The 32 million votes that came in were for the names and numbers people could remember, both good and bad, not for the people in the middle that don't stand out.

The group number was one that was repeated from the first season, Joy to the World. The most interesting thing about it is how all the different voices interpret the song. The song isn't real great yet, as it's not until much later in the season when they group numbers start to sound real good, as only the better voices are still there. It's nice to see that the hokey choreography is still alive and well.

The guys are up first, and are asked if this week was any easier, and Chris Richardson says a quick no. Asked about his grandma, he says she liked his performance and moves and she was dancing. He looks scared to death as Ryan moves to start calling out who is going home. He even visually gulps. Phil Stacy, Chris Sligh, Sundance Head, Blake Lewis, and Jerod Cotter are all called safe. Nick Pedro is the first to go home tonight. Randy tells hims to stay in his genre, because he has a good voice, and pat himself on the back, as he's standing there as the top 20. Simon backs up what he said the night before about charisma, and Paula says she's glad after he opted out last season that he opted back in.

Nick gets a chance to sing Fever one last time, and I have to say this guy is one class act. He is visibly upset, yet he sings it it out really well, and towards the end of the song, he heads over to the seats of the nine other guys, and shakes hands with all of them, during his song. Too bad he didn't show all that before, as that could have been that thing to give him the charisma Simon thought he was lacking. He thanks everybody and ends with a "God bless." And the most touching thing of all is that Sundance is in tears. We always have people later on in the season upset at people leaving and sometimes this early we have a few tears, but everyone tonight is so distraught at losing some of their own, and it's very touching.

The girls are up, and Jordin Sparks admits she's kind of nervous. She woke up so excited, then thought, wait, never mind. She says it's even more emotional than the week before as they've had another week to bond. Stephanie Edwards, Gina Glocksen, Sabrina Sloan, and Melinda Doolittle are all called safe. Alaina Alexander is reminded about Simon's comparisons to a racer running out of steam, and she glances over at Simon and says, "Clever." That 'tude isn't helping her out any. She's out, and says it's an amazing experience, thanking her family and friends. She turns to the other girls still in it and tells them to sing their butts off.

Alaina tries to sing, and can't. Any part of his song that was in pitch in this song before, is not now. Jordin starts crying, and Leslie Hunt consoles her. Alaina gives up singing, and calls out to the others to join her on stage, and they have a group hug and share sentiments. Sundance is still crying, even for the ladies that are leaving. Again, it's all very touching. And it makes me see a little more about why they know there's more Sundance could be putting in his performances. They're waiting for him to sing something with all that emotion he has in him. If he finds a way to channel the stuff he feels for his son, and the stuff he feels to be losing friends tonight ... wow.

Kellie Pickler makes an appearance, saying it's good to be back. She's getting ready to go on tour with Brad Paisley, is using her money to buy shoes, and tried sushi recently. She says there's "spider sushi" with little legs sticking out of it. Ryan tells her it's not real spiders, and she asks why they call it that then. She sings I Wonder from her album and cries at the end, singing about how she wonders if her mom that she hasn't seen since she was a child ever thinks about her. Just listening to it on the CD makes me cry, but now in person, seeing the emotions attached, wow. Another note, Simon keeps rudely talking to Paula throughout.

See the following for an article I wrote about Kellie, Kellie Pickler, Just a Small Town Girl, and Kellie Pickler Interview for my interview wit her.

The guys link up again to find out who is the other one leaving. As Chris Richardson and Brandon Rogers are called safe, Melinda sits consoling Jordin and holding on to her, very motherly. AJ Tabaldo and Sanjaya Malakar are called down to the stage. Sanjaya's mother needs to buy him shirts with shorter sleeves, or tell him to make sure he keeps them off his hands. When AJ is told he is going home, Sanjaya looks surprised, and admits to being shocked. AJ is asked if he's surprised as well, but what's he going to say?

Paula isn't happy, saying it's a singing competition, but she's not feeling it looking at who is staying and who is going. Randy backs that up. As AJ sings his last song, Melinda is crying now, and Sundance still is. The ending of the song is fantastic enough for me to say it's a shame this guy is going home.

The girls take their judgement seats and Lakisha Jones and Haley Scarnado are called safe very quickly. Antonella Barba, Leslie, and Jordin are called down to be with Ryan. Antonella is the first to be called safe. This leaves Leslie and Jordin together, and is somewhat ironic as just a little earlier, Leslie was consoling Jordin. It's now Gina's turn to be shown crying. It's Leslie that is going home, and Gina is still crying, and now Jordin is again as well. The judges again bring up that the wrong people are going home. They show a good-bye tape for Leslie, Alaina, Nick, and AJ, and of all the great tie-ins, the background music is Chris Daughtry's Home. I wonder if this will replace Day.

Leslie sings us out with Gina still crying. Everyone walks out to greet Leslie on the stage, and Jordin has a teary face and is holding hands with Melinda. Leslie surprises us all and improvises into the song at the end "Why did I decide to scat? People don't care for jazz." I give her a lot of credit on that. I think she has much more inside her that we never got to see, as she was going for the stuff she thought would entertain us and be more status quo, instead of showing us her funky creative side. I wish we could have seen that. I live in the Chicago 'burbs, and just north of where her family lives, so maybe I'll be lucky enough to catch her act some day and see more of who she really is.

It's funny that two of the people being kicked off sang a song about "Feeling Good," as neither of them were by the end of the night, and with the amount of tears that were flowing, I don't think anyone else was either.

Frankly, I thought all the crying was a BIG turnoff. This is reality TV! They are all eventually going home, except one! This whole group needs to put their big-girl and big-boy panties on.

Anon, you said it...
"This is reality TV"...
but unlike you, that's what we REAL humans do, we show our EMOTIONS because we all have HEARTS.
