American Idol Commentary - Forming a New Group

I'm putting together an idea for a band, based on this year's American Idol. What do you think of the blended voices of Lakisha Jones, Melinda Doolittle, Chris Sligh, and Sundance Head? Don't worry, Melinda wouldn't be stuck with the backup role. I just kept thinking of this while I was watching the show tonight. I think we could probably include Jordin and Blake Lewis, too.

It just seems those six people have it all going on in this year's competition. Sure, there's a few others that shine, but I think those six would get along, all be thankful for the opportunity. Plus, they all seem to know their style, and don't come out with something where you have to ask what the hell is that? We already know that Chris and Blake can blend their voices from group night, so why not include some others in the mix as well?

Lakisha knows she's R&B and has it down pat. Aretha, Gladys, etc. She's got it and knows it. Tonight she sang Midnight Train to Georgia, and while others didnt' like it as much as like week. how could you top it really? You can't, so you just go for something completely different. What I think is neat when I look at her during and after a performance is that she knows she's good. This is someone who has been toiling away singing in churches, wishing for a big break somehow while she raised her daughter. I think she could get kicked off tonight and still find someone willing to represent her.

Melinda Doolittle? How refreshing is it that she's willing to admit she hates shopping and would be lost without her girlfriends that help her out? She's smart enough to know a good voice isn't all you need. You also need the right look and someone to help you with your vocals, even though you have a gift. And if you question yourself in a lot of these matters anyway, after too many years taking the backseat, it's helpful to have someone or two, ready to say here's how to make it better or here's how to make your look match what you're trying to say.

Jordin Sparks has been holding out on us. She's got that booming powerhouse voice and showed it to us last night finally. She knows what she should be singing, but was waiting for the confirmation from the judges and audience. A little confidence will do this girl good. She is absolutely cute as a button, and I think she'ss far prettier than Antonella who they always say is drop-dead gorgeous. With those emotions and immature voice, she needs some veterans to point her in the right direction, and who better than Lakisha and Melinda?

And Gina I think is a split away from being really good. I think away from that stage she's a different performer, but has too many years longing to be on the show and is afraid to do what she knows she's good at. Like Simon said, though, she's not going to win this with powerhouse vocals, looking at who her competition is. Instead of trying to hit notes she knows she's iffy on, go one with songs she knows she does great with. It's right there, and we can see it.

Stephanie Edwards isn't my favorite, but she definitely ranks up there with the better female vocalists. Her songs have been somewhat similar, and I'd like her to move a little out of that range. I don't know how long Sabrina Sloan will last, as she's only there on voice selection. As much as that is important, it can't be the key to your whole American Idol experience. Once she doesn't pick the perfect song, she's nowhere near where she is when she picks the perfect song. Her song choices will be more difficult in the the theme weeks of finals.

Not only does Antonella not belong in this group, she doesn't belong anywhere on any performing stage. At least if she insists on singing Celine Dion. There is perhaps a niche for her somewhere, and although I'm struggling to find it right now, I'm sure it exists. The same can be said for Alaina and Haley. They're trying to make themselves fit into a certain type of song that requires big vocals, and looking at Melinda and Lakisha, they are so far away that it's ridiculous to attempt it.

I don't even know where to categorize Leslie Hunt, as I totally don't get her. Yet, she talked about becoming a certain type of performer away from who she is in her gigs, as it won't be accepted here. Here's my question, why are you trying to fit into something you know isn't you? Go do your type of gigs with our blessing. We don't want you to change who you are to fit this competition.

Look for any of the last four names to leave tonight. They're trying to force something that isn't meant to be. And because the first three are doing so well, there's probably no hope for me to see them in a group together, but I admit to being a dreamer.

Considering they are pushing the females hard this year, that supergroup from the Hollywood rounds should band together and be a group (Blake, Rudy, Chris S., and Tom). Here's my theory (not that you asked, but here it is anyway). Music goes in about 10 year cycles. It is now 2007, which means if the cycle continues, the Alt. Rock music will fade and the Boy Band Pop will rule the airwaves once again (yea!). It happened in the 70s (Jackson 5), the 80s (New Kids on the Block/New Edition), and the 90s (NSync/Backstreet Boys). It's time for that group dynamic of 4-5 guys singing harmonies and dancing. Those four could lead the way...besides, I love Rudy and want to hear more of him. I was so sad he left so early.
